“For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” 2 Corinthians 5:1
Every person who has ever lived has pondered that great question: “What happens next? What happens after we die?” Some think nothing happens after we die, that we simply don’t exist anymore. Others think we are reincarnated as another person or animal, and that how we live this life will determine what our next life will be. I don’t know about you, but these views leave me feeling hopeless.
I want to draw your attention to the first three words Paul declares in the verse above: “For we know.” Notice he doesn’t say, “For we think, or hope, or guess,” but, “For we know.” How do we know? The short answer is because the Bible tells us so and because, as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:5b, God “has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.” Just as the Word of God and the Holy Spirit reveal that we are sinners in desperate need of a Savior, they also reveal that we have a heavenly home waiting for us when we die. This leaves me feeling extremely hopeful.
Millions of people today are feeling hopeless, but God has made us to be messengers of the gospel of Jesus Christ so that we might share the hope of heaven with them. Sunday morning we are going to dig deep into 2 Corinthians 5:1-11 in order that we might be prepared to answer the question every person ponders: “What Happens Next?”
God bless you all and hope to see you there!
