“Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you...” Matthew 5:31-32a
This Sunday morning I will boldly go where few good preacher men have gone before. In fact, this morning when I went to read one of my favorite authors, I was shocked to see how little he had to say on the dreaded subject of divorce.
Dr. Armand Nicholi, the author of “The Fractured Family: Following It Into the Future”, wrote, “The trend toward quick and easy divorce, and the ever increasing divorce rate, subjects more and more children to physically and emotionally absent parents. If the trend is not reversed, the quality of family life will continue to deteriorate, producing a society with a higher incidence of mental illness than ever before.”
Divorce has likely affected every one of us in one way or another, and that’s why it’s so sad to find many teachers of God’s word saying so little on the subject. The reason there are so many confusing and conflicting teachings on the subject is because of how many people read the Word of God through their own experiences rather than through the heart and experiences found in God’s Word.
God told the prophet Malachi, “I hate divorce.” In the book of Hosea we find Hosea’s patient love for his wife, Gomer, who had not only committed adultery but also continued to live as a harlot while married to Hosea, as a beautiful illustration of God’s faithful and forgiving love for Israel. This love is also spoken of in Ephesians 5 where Paul writes about the intimate love Jesus has for His bride, the church. God always desires our marriages to be full of forgiving love and restoring grace.
My desire this Sunday is to clear up the confusion on this important subject by opening up Matthew 5:31-32 and discovering “Jesus’ Heart on Divorce”.
God bless you all and hope to see you there!
