“Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask the counsel of the Lord.” Joshua 9:14
After the conquest of Ai, Joshua and his leaders knew the kings of Canaan were not going to give up without a fight. So Joshua and the children of Israel prepared for battle. They sharpened their swords and checked their armor, but they didn’t seek the Lord and the Gibeonites took advantage of this.
When the Gibeonites came to Joshua and his leaders, they told them four lies. After looking at the provisions the Gibeonites had, Joshua and the leaders believed their lies and made a covenant with them. In other words, they walked by sight and not by faith. Joshua and his leaders were good people that wanted to be a blessing to the Gibeonites, “but they did not ask the counsel of the Lord,” and as a result things didn’t start well.
It’s important for us to understand that sometimes Satan comes as a roaring lion, but other times he comes as a sneaky snake. Therefore we must always prepare for the enemy by spiritually putting on “the whole armor of God, that we might be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 5:11).
As you go out into the battlefield today and face the enemy, make sure you ask the counsel of the Lord, “for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against powers, against the rulers of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and have done all, to stand” (Ephesians 5:12).
