“Now Joshua was old, advanced in years. And the Lord said to him: ‘You are old, advanced in years, and there remains very much land yet to be possessed.’” Joshua 13:1
God commissioned Joshua as a young man to conquer the land, but even as Joshua became an old man, God reassured him that He wasn’t done with him yet. Joshua was about a hundred years old when God commissioned him to divide the land. Joshua obeyed the Lord, and for the next ten years he divided the land so the children of Israel could enjoy what God had promised them.
Hey, you old guys reading this, God is not done with you yet! Just as God used Moses to disciple Joshua, and Joshua to disciple Caleb, and Caleb to disciple Othniel to “wholly follow the Lord,” He has also commissioned you to continue to disciple others. In Matthew 28:19 Jesus said,“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you even to the end of the age.”
What a joyful ministry this must have been for Joshua. In my mind's eye I can see Joshua sharing stories with young men of how God worked among them as he divided the land, how He delivered them from Egypt, how He parted the Red Sea, how He was with them as they wandered through the wilderness for forty years, how He conquered Jericho and Ai and all the other land, and many other stories that revealed the faithfulness of our heavenly Father to fulfill His promises.
Hey, you old and young guys reading this, God is not done with you, and this Wednesday night we are going to learn six spiritual lessons that will help us enjoy the land the Lord has promised us and experience the blessing that comes from discipleship.
Hope to see you tomorrow night at 6:30pm at Jorge & Perla Portillo’s home. God bless you all!
